New Year's Resolutions... Improving Your Odds of Keeping Them
Most Americans make some kind of New Year’s resolution, but the reality is that by the end of February, a vast majority of us have let the drive for change fall by the wayside. Experts say that only 10 to 30 % of resolutions are successful. So why are these people succeeding?
Well, when it comes to weight loss (the most popular New Year’s resolution), success is usually found in setting small, specific goals – rather than broad, unrealistic ones. Instead of declaring that you “want to lose weight,” you might consider setting (and writing down) goals like these:
-
Stop drinking regular soda
-
Drink more water
-
Eliminate high-fat snacks
-
Eat more fruit and vegetables
-
Increase physical activity (e.g. walk everyday)
- Weigh weekly to stay on top of your results
By setting small, specific goals, most people will feel more successful and will be more motivated to continue with their plan.
The other most popular resolution is to quit smoking. This is certainly one of the most difficult changes to make, and a specific plan with lots of support will be needed to achieve success. Some ways to stay on track are to stay away from temptation (smoky environments), focus on the huge health benefits of being a non-smoker and calculate the cost savings realized by not purchasing cigarettes.
Accomplishing either of these resolutions will be more likely with support, and BVMA can help! Our staff includes a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Smoking Cessation Counselor. Ask your BVMA provider about a referral to these services or give us a call to learn more.
